Roaming Through

As an artist in residence at the Taitung Fine Arts Museum, I was able to observe people and their appearances, whether in action or in rest. I listened to the sounds present not only within the museum, but also in its surrounding environs. I discovered that the Taitung Fine Arts Museum was much more than a museum: it had become an important locale for public leisure and activities. With this in mind, I decided to use the museum’s existing installations and broadcast system as the medium through which sound was channeled throughout the museum grounds.

Sound content was mainly considered from two different angles. The first was the soundscape of the museum’s interior and environs. The second was the sounds of Taitung in its role as a transfer station. Geographically, Taitung serves as a transfer station for those traveling to Orchid Island and Green Island. Temporally, Taitung serves as an important turning point in the lives of many. These sounds come from the various encounters between myself and Taitung. I look forward to others encountering these same sounds in different, unexpected corners.

Some of the sounds, by enlarging on those that originally existed amid the museum’s installations, look to expand on the boundaries of sound and to awaken a perception, or an ‘act of listening’ in the listener. Some of the sounds were recorded outside of museum grounds and, through the unnatural existence of these sounds, look to drive or expand the listener’s imagination with regard to the existing scenery and environment.

“Are there other ways or possibilities of listening?” This is the main question asked by this work, which invites us to listen and discover.
